"Guiding Notions" is the counterpart follow-up to "Accents in Gold" released in the summer of 2021. It more or less set the framework for the styles here that will take you from elements of more straightforward and modal jazz into and out of the time signatures you typically find in progressive rock and jazz fusion. This album certainly has plenty of new sounding material to offer which gives character to its name and concept. However, like the last alibum the story is conveyed through the music and is thus an all instrumental recording. That is a trend that the artist has adopted in the spirit of RM Allegiance and Eyeing the Sky albums recorded years earlier. You likely have not heard the last of either of those project collaborations but this year Eric has focused on his solo career and now has been willing to assume the role of producer and audio engineer as well! It seems the biggest difference between this album and the last is that fully instrumental music dominates here! "Accents in Gold" provided plenty of that as well but there was almost 17 minutes of keyboard-only material there and here only tracks 1 and 6 comprise that style and they are both much shorter tracks. If anything can surely be inferred about the artist its to expect the unexpected from one project to the next. "Guiding Notions" should make listeners and appreciaters of jazz and progressive music curious about the album at least a little bit just based on Eric's propensity and passion towards the more adventurous sonic landscapes!
